Aleksotas has seen significant development in recent months, with heavy machinery active not only at the football and rugby arena but also at the Extreme Sports Center construction site. Part of the old buildings at S. Dariaus ir S. Girėno g. 29A have been demolished to make way for a modern complex.
“A grand infrastructure development for active leisure is beginning in Aleksotas. Construction is already underway in some areas, while we are looking for contractors in others. Over the next few years, we will build at least four exceptional facilities. Construction of the football and rugby indoor arena has started on Europos prospektas – heavy equipment is already working there. The work on the Extreme Sports Center has also commenced similarly.
The most important thing is that investments in sports infrastructure yield multifaceted benefits: for athletes – to improve and achieve their goals, and for residents – to strengthen their health and enjoy their leisure time,” says Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.
Preparatory work is underway at the S. Dariaus ir S. Girėno g. site – dilapidated buildings are being demolished, the land is being excavated and leveled, and underground networks are being installed. The main construction process is expected to begin next spring.
The 4,000 sq. m complex will feature special surfaces for extreme sports, as well as open and publicly accessible sports areas.
The outdoor area will include spaces for “Pump Track” tracks, a beginners’ zone, as well as areas for parkour, rollerblading, scooters, an outdoor climbing wall, and more.
In parallel, preparations are being made to landscape and equip the complex’s territory – including visitor access, bicycle racks, a parking lot, lighting, and greenery.
At an extraordinary council meeting convened in September, the possibility of submitting an application to the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (ŠMSM) for partial funding of the Extreme Sports Center construction was approved.
The total estimated project value is €16.33 million. Upon receiving partial funding, €8 million would be allocated from the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports’ sports development program. The municipality would cover the remaining amount with budget funds.
The Extreme Sports Center under construction will be the largest in the Baltic States, suitable for both beginners and professionals.
In the coming years, Aleksotas will be enhanced not only by the aforementioned sports complex with a football and rugby arena but also by two more facilities. A tender has been announced for the construction of a universal sports base at Technikumo g. 3 – this will include a swimming pool with an artificial wave, and sand and hard-surface areas.
Concurrently, a tender is underway for the construction of a universal outdoor sports ground at Veiverių g. 132: the 3.5-hectare area will feature spaces for basketball, football, beach volleyball, and other sports.
