Vilnius launches architectural competition for a new school in Tarandė

Vilniaus miesto savivaldybė plans new school construction in the rapidly developing Tarandė district. The project is being handled by Vilniaus vystymo kompanija, which has announced an architectural design competition. Architects and design firms are invited to submit their ideas for a modern school that meets high architectural quality and sustainability standards.

The competition has a prize fund of 30,000 euros, to be divided among the top three participants. The winner will receive 15,000 euros and a contract for design services. Submissions are due by December 15, 2026.

Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas stated that the new school will significantly address the shortage of educational institutions in the Pašilaičiai elderate, which has a growing number of young families. The school will accommodate approximately 600–800 students from primary and basic education grades. The architectural competition aims to select the best design and ensure high quality.

Resident feedback was gathered prior to the competition, with a focus on infrastructure and access. Proposals included traffic flow solutions, roundabouts, and pedestrian zones. These suggestions have been incorporated into the competition requirements.

Vilnius Vice Mayor Vytautas Mitalas expressed enthusiasm for the Tarandė community’s involvement and highlighted the progress in educational infrastructure projects, including this new school alongside three others under construction and existing ones undergoing reconstruction.

Jonas Stravinskas, Head of the Design and Construction Management Department at Vilniaus vystymo kompanija, explained that the competition aims to find an architectural concept that excels in urban, functional, and aesthetic aspects. A commission of architects and other experts will evaluate the submissions.

Stravinskas emphasized that a modern school is more than just a learning space; it must be functional, adaptable, and integrate harmoniously with its surroundings. The competition seeks an idea that provides quality spatial solutions and serves as a solid foundation for future design work.

The winner is expected to be announced in February 2027. Second and third place will receive 9,000 euros and 6,000 euros, respectively.

Competition documents are available on the Central Public Procurement Information System.
