Seimas proposes to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the Congress of Lutsk in 2029

The Seimas has adopted a resolution proposing to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the Congress of Lutsk in 2029. The resolution highlights the historical significance of this event, which brought together European rulers and was initiated by Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania. The congress, held in Lutsk (currently in Ukraine) from January 9 to 29, 1429, addressed crucial matters of European politics, including Vytautas’s potential coronation, joint defense against the Ottoman Empire, and issues concerning the Hussite wars, church unity, and trade disputes. The resolution emphasizes that the congress was a pivotal moment in integrating the Grand Duchy of Lithuania into Central Europe and establishing its influence. It also recognizes the congress’s importance to the historical heritage of Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Moldova, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and other European nations. The Seimas expressed support for Ukraine’s initiative to commemorate this event and reiterated its commitment to Ukraine’s EU and NATO aspirations. The resolution calls on the Lithuanian government to organize commemorative events, support historical research and educational activities, and collaborate with Ukraine and other interested countries to potentially host a high-level European leaders’ summit in Lutsk in 2029. Additionally, the resolution aims to have the 600th anniversary included in the UNESCO calendar of commemorative dates. The resolution was unanimously approved with 72 votes.
